La Cloche Site Database

I just got back from my annual post exams La Cloche Silhouette hike a couple weeks ago and this time I decided to hike into each site and take a look. I seem to always end up on the same few sites so this was an opportunity to see some parts of the park that I’d never seen before and get a few more kilometres out of the trail. And I figured if I was going to go check out all the sites, I might as well take some photos and write a quick description so other people can have access to it.

Unfortunately some sites were occupied, and I didn’t want to disturb people so there are some sites I missed. Currently they are H1, H4, H5, H7, H35, and H49. If anyone has photos or a description of one of those sites (or wants to add / make corrections to the photos or description I already have), I would greatly appreciate it (with credit of course). Unless otherwise noted, all photos and descriptions were taken and written by me in April 2024.

H3

H3: Pretty site with really only one apparent tent spot which is a dedicated tent pad. Fire pit with no seating apart from rock shelf beside it. Relatively easy water access its a bit of a shelf. Almost right on the trail. Looks like really nice swimming

H6

H6: A really nice site. Lots of good tent spots, two fire pits (one presumably unofficial that should probably be removed), easy water access. There are only two seats around the fire. A couple hundred meters off the trail

H8

H8: On the shore of a river. Easy water access, space for 3 tents. Nice firepit with a moderate amount of seating. Close to the trail. Can be loud due to the dam upstream if the water is high.

H16

H16: Pretty with a wide view of the lake. Nice fire pit and log to sit on. The washroom is a little bit close to camp. There are really only one or two places to put a tent, and they are rather exposed. If the weather looks nasty, I would set up back in the forest a hundred meters or so back up the trail (if travelling clockwise).

H17

H17: Large open site, lots of spaces for tents. Inconvenient water access, nice fire pit with some seating. Located not far off the trail

H18

H18: Nice site, could be quite exposed if the wind comes from the lake. Nice fire pit with some seating, plenty of tent spots. Very inconvenient water access

H19

H19: Pretty site out on a large point. 700 meters from the trail. There are only two obvious tent spots. Easy water access. Lovely large fire pit with lots of seating.

H59

H59: This might be my least favourite site. About a 600 meter walk from the trail, not well signed (I got lost in both directions), mediocre water access, only really space for one tent, and no seating around the fire. The water looks pretty weedy.

H20

H20: A relatively small site, no seating around the fire pit. Not the easiest water access, and probably two viable tent spots.

H21

H21: A large, pretty site situated out on a point. Room for at least 3 tents. Firepit with a few logs by it, but not setup for seating or large enough to be comfortable. ~700m from the trail.

H22

H22: Right on the trail, little to no privacy. One great tent spot and two more that are a little rooty. Very inconvenient water access. It’s quite pretty, but I’ve heard it can be very buggy in the early summer.

H23

H23: Near the trail, the closest body of water is the stream you cross. It could be dry at some times of the year, and I would probably avoid it during peak summer. Not a large site, but 2-3 good tent spots. Firepit with very limited seating.

H31

H31: A very pretty site. On the smaller side, however, it is quite flat with three good spots for tents. Nice fire pit with a good amount of seating by the water and easy water access.

H32

H32: Kind of an odd site. No great areas for tents, very exposed, along way off the trail, not the easiest water access, . Has an interesting terraced stone sitting area with a fire pit on the water.

H33

H33: 600m off trail. There are very few good tent spots. Good amount of seating around the fire. The washroom is not very private and is visible from most of the site. Easy water access. Very pretty though.

H34

H34: Large site looking out at David Lake. As there are cottages on David, there may be boat traffic, especially during the summer. There are a good number of spots for tents, and easy water access (can be very slippery though).

H37

H37: Large stepped site. Not much flat ground, with a couple places to pitch a tent, with none being ideal. Easy water access is off to the right. Large fire pit with very limited seating.

H38

H38: A large, very open site. Small firepit with limited seating. There are lots of places to put tents, but all seem to be either rooty or not flat. Steep water access

H45

H45: Large site, steep water access. Quite a bit off the trail, although closer than H46. There are lots of places for tents.

H46

H46: Large open site, a long way off the trail. The main site is located up above the water, with a short trail down to it. Deep enough to swim. Large fire pit with a few large logs as seating. There are lots of large flat spots for tents.

H47

H47: Maybe the prettiest site in the park, but small, with limited places for tents. At quite high elevation, it can be windy, and there is little shelter available.

H48

H48: Fire pit somewhat exposed. Good sun expose on rocks for drying wet items. Steep water access. Sheltered sitting area near fire pit. Sandy primary tent platform. Photos and Description courtesy of u/tincartofdoom

H50

H50: A big site, plenty of places for tents. Easy water access, but not deep enough to be ideal for swimming. Nice fire pit with quite a bit of seating around it.

H51

H51: Right next to H52, but nicer. Easy water access on the left, a nice firepit, and three reasonably flat places to pitch tents, although a couple of them are a little rocky. Still boggy in areas, but the water at the front of the site is deep enough for swimming.

H52

H52: This would not be a preferred site. There are limited flat areas for tents. Out on a small point. Quite boggy, but easy water access. Would not be good for swimming.

H53

H53: Lovely site, not far off the trail, but still with privacy. 2 nice large tent plots with room for one or two more in less ideal locations. Easy water access, looks like swimming would be nice.
